What is Aunt Jackie’s Don’t Shrink Flaxseed Elongating Curling Gel?
The Don’t Shrink Flaxseed Elongating Curling Gel touts it is designed to elongate curls and leaves the hair soft, manageable, and not hard or crunchy.
It contains shea butter, flaxseed, extra virgin olive oil, and wheat proteins. And it is free of parabens, sulfates, petrolatum, and mineral oil.
The Pros and Cons
We first want to say we love how inexpensive this gel is. We bought a 15oz jar for 6.95 (USD), and it is currently selling on Amazon.com for 6.89 (USD).
To date, we could only find this gel for sale on Amazon.com. Shopping on Amazon.com was very convenient for us, but we must admit this could be a con for those who would rather purchase at a store.
The texture of the gel is nice. It is very light, not tacky. After applying and smoothing with a boar bristle brush, the hair felt soft, but we noticed the hold was not very strong, particularly around the hairline. Now we must admit, it was very hot and humid on the day we tested the gel (temperature exceeded 100°F), but we are used to maximum strength gels like Eco Styler.
The nutrients in the gel are also a plus! Shea butter, flaxseed, and extra virgin olive oil are healthy ingredients and will help promote healthy hair growth. With that being said, we discovered past buyers complained (with evidence) about finding sodium hydroxide (lye) in the ingredients. Our recently purchased jar did not contain lye.
Conclusion
Overall, we liked Aunt Jackie’s Don’t Shrink Flaxseed Elongating Curling Gel, and we plan to continue using it. It may not have a strong hold, but it still should be able to work for slicking back buns and ponytails (puffs for our natural gals)! Based on our recent purchase, we believe the concern about lye being in the ingredients is unwarranted. It may have been removed due to complaints, but please check with the retailer before purchasing.
