Style Alert: The Crimped Ponytail

crimped ponytailSpring is around the corner. Thoughts of flowers, cool breezes, and warmer weather have us excitedly thinking about cute, new hairstyles to rock! So far, one hairstyle has us abuzz at Lengthy Hair. It is the crimped ponytail! We believe crimping or a highly textured wavy look will be a hot look this spring and summer.

Now the crimped ponytail is not new. Celebrities like Beyonce, Rihanna, Janet Jackson, Nicki Minaj, Naomi Campbell, Ariana Grande, and Kim Kardashian are just a few starlets who have already embraced the chic, textured look.

Now it is time for you to get onboard.

Contrasting Textures

What we loved the most about the crimped ponytail are the contrasting textures. The base of her ponytail remains smooth and sleek, but her ponytail is crimped and wavy along the length!

Of course, you can mimic the look and add your own flair. Playing with the length and direction can drastically change the look – depending on your style.

Get A Crimped Ponytail

First you will need to smooth your hair into a ponytail. We suggest using the Taliah Waajid Curls, Waves, and Naturals Hairline Help 2 in 1 to keep your baby hairs and edges smooth. After you secure your ponytail with an elastic, wrap a small amount of hair around the elastic to hide it. Secure with a hair pin. Opt to use a light touch of hairspray to keep the base of your ponytail smooth.

Bonus suggestion: You can add hair enhancements to extend the length of the ponytail.

Now it is time to crimp! Read the directions on how to use the iron (this includes verifying which temperature to set the iron too). Spray a small amount of heat protectant. In general, when you crimp hair you should start at the top of the ponytail. Clamp the iron around the area you want to crimp and hold for a few seconds then release. Go down the length of the area in a  horizontal direction all while keeping the crimp pattern consistent.

If you want to skip heat altogether, try braiding dampened hair in small to medium braids . Once dry, unravel the hair and fluff. Voila! You should have a wavy look (also called a braid-out). No heat necessary.

Please let us know if you have tried this hairstyle. Be would love to see pics.

  1. Some great tips here on getting this style. I hadn’t noticed how many people were wearing this before but now I know I am sure to. High ponytails in general are everything right now but this adds another fun element to it.

    1. Yes, high ponytails are all the rage! Some crimped pieces can add texture and take the look to another level. 🙂
